The Foundation manages and distributes funds based upon its strategic initiatives of "Economic Security, Educational Success, and Healthy Lives". The initial endowment, donated by United States Senator Jesse H. Metcalf, was $10,000 (the equivalent of $233,000 in 2019)<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl?cost1=10000&year1=191606&year2=201908|title=CPI Inflation Calculator|website=data.bls.gov|access-date=2019-09-23}}</ref> and has grown to $970,000,000 as of 2018. Members of the Foundation's Board have included John Nicholas Brown II, the honorable Maureen McKenna Goldberg, and Jorge Elorza|Mayor Jorge Elorza; current members of the board include Janet L.
