The Art League of Rhode Island was founded in 2000 by Nancy Gaucher Thomas and Mark Simmons. The league invites artists to become members, and promotes them through its website and through league events, such as exhibitions, programs, and collaborations with other arts organizations. The league also does arts-related outreach into Rhode Island communities, including the 02603 Project in Central Falls, Rhode Island, a graffiti project underwritten by the The Timberland Company|Timberland Company in 2007.
